Why does Arnold draw? What is the power of creative expression? (Ms. T.)
Arnold loves to draw, and he draws in order to express
himself and free himself from the daily challenges of reservation life. In “The
Black-Eye-of-the-Month Club” Arnold explains that because he is regularly
bullied, he is safer staying inside. When he is inside he reads or draws.
Arnold draws because words are “too unpredictable” and “too limited” (Alexie
5). Drawing allows Arnold to communicate with anyone and everyone. He explains,
“When you draw a picture, everybody can understand it” (Alexie 5). It isn’t
necessary to speak the same language as the artist in order to appreciate
his/her art. Drawing also gives Arnold a sense of importance and power. Because
of physical differences, he often feels marginalized and powerless. Drawing
serves as a way to escape these feelings. Arnold dreams that his artwork may be
his ticket out of the reservation. In a sense he uses art to escape. He notes
that many rich and famous people of color are artists, and he hopes that one
day he could use his art to achieve similar successes. Drawing is a creative
outlet for Arnold that allows him to feel free.
